ACCREDITATION GUIDELINES FOR APPROVAL OF COURSES AND MEETINGS BY THE ECVD
Background
The European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD, the College) is a veterinary specialty organization within the structure recommended by the European Union Advisory Committee for Veterinary Training.
The primary objectives of the ECVD are to advance veterinary dermatology in Europe and to increase the competence of those who work in this field. In order to do this, the ECVD offers veterinarians with suitable credentials and experience the opportunity to sit the Alternate Route Qualifying Examination in veterinary dermatology which may be an end in itself or a requirement to moving forward to the Diploma Examination via the Alternate Route.
Prior to entering the examination, the candidate must attend 20 days of tuition on courses and meetings approved by the ECVD. Assuming a 5-day week and 7 hours of tuition per day, this amounts to 35 hours per week and therefore 140 hours in 4 weeks.
Course Organization and Content
A Diplomate of the ECVD or American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD) or a person of equivalent standing should normally be involved in the organization and/or delivery of the course material. Persons of equivalent standing include, but are not confined to, holders of the Fellows of the Australian College of Veterinary Practitioners, DVDs, highly recognized dermatological clinicians without Diplomate status, pathologists, immunologists, pharmacologists and therapeuticians.
Courses/meetings should be clearly devoted to dermatology but a wide array of subjects is acceptable. These may include basic sciences related to the skin, relevant aspects of immunology, histopathology/cytology, therapeutics and general clinical dermatology of small animals, large animals and exotic species.
The provision of course notes or proceedings will normally be expected. These must be available for examination pre- or post-meeting and submitted to the Credentials and Education Committee (see below).
Dermatological streams in general meetings (e.g. BSAVA, North American Veterinary Congress and similar) will not be considered.
Courses/Meetings Routinely Recognised
Dermatology courses/meetings organized by the following groups are currently routinely recognized:
1. ESVD
2. ESAVS
3. CES (France)
4. Itinerario di Dermatologia SCIVAC (Italy)
5. Performat (Italy)
and have satisfied all the required criteria for continuing recognition.
However, in addition, meetings/courses which are organized on a regular basis (e.g. the British BVDSG and the ISVD) and are of consistently high quality may be routinely recognized after an initial application from the Secretary or similar individual from that group to the Chair of the College’s Credentials and Education Committee.
The application is considered by the members of the Credentials and Education Committee. Approval or rejection is solely the decision of the Credentials and Education Committee. In the event of rejection of the application, there is no Appeals Procedure. Normally, recommendation by the Credentials and Education Committee will imply unanimous agreement of its members on the application. Three (3) copies of sets of course notes from the last three (3) meetings must be submitted with the application. Course notes will not normally be required for approval by the Chair of the Credentials and Education Committee for subsequent meetings, although three copies should be forwarded to him/her for the College’s records. A fee (currently 100 Euro) is required for consideration and is non-refundable in the event of non-approval. Re-application for approval is required every five (5) years and a fee will be charged on each occasion.
For courses applying to be recognized on a regular basis, Form 1 should be completed and forwarded to the Chair of the Credentials and Education Committee, together with the required information as detailed and the requisite fee.
Other Courses and Meetings - Approval Procedure
For courses not approved as above (which will include those run on a sporadic or one off basis), applications are considered by the members of the Credentials and Education Committee. Approval or rejection is solely the decision of the Credentials and Education Committee. In the event of rejection, there is no Appeals Procedure. Normally, recommendation by the Credentials and Education Committee will imply unanimous agreement of its members on the application. A fee of 100 Euro is required for consideration and is non-refundable in the event of non-approval.
It is expected that early recognition/approval of the course will normally be required by the course organiser for publicity material. Therefore, applications must be submitted to the Credentials and Education Committee of the ECVD at least two months prior to the course. No exceptions will be made to this deadline.
Final Approval
For all courses, final approval will be given in “days equivalent” decided on the basis of the programme, information and documents supplied to the ECVD.
